LUCKNOW: The engineering students of Dr. APJ Kalam Technical University can now skip classes in the final semester

The university has made classroom study optional in the BTech final semester in its 590 affiliated colleges from this academic session.

The decision was taken in the university's board of studies meeting on Thursday.

Students will have the option to study the final semester curriculum by registering in the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) offered by the university.

The exemption will be available to around 20,000 students enrolled in BTech final semester in this session.

The decision has been taken to ease the burden of job hunt on students and give them more time to prepare for competitive examinations.

It will also benefit students who get job placements in the final year of the course and are unable to attend regular classes.

"The attendance of many final semester students falls short as they are busy in attending job fairs, preparing for competitive examinations. So, the university has decided to give them this relaxation,

" said AKTU vice-chancellor Vinay Kumar Pathak.

The exemption will be given only to the students of final semester and they will have to register for MOOCs, the VC said, adding that the change has been made following a technical education teaching model adopted worldwide.

Meanwhile, to facilitate job placements, AKTU has made summer internship mandatory in all four years of BTech course. Until now, it was compulsory only in the final year.

The first year internship should be of 3-4 weeks, the second year of 4-5 weeks, while the third and the final year should be of 5-6 weeks.

"Also, the curriculum will be reduced in the final year and only industry oriented papers will be taught," AKTU spokesperson Asheesh Mishra said.
